GLAD TIDINGS.. UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN IS 60

It gladdens the heart that the University of Ibadan which was established in 1948 has indeed come of age and still waxing stronger.

Sixty years in the life of any organisation is worthy of celebration especially for one which has grown in stature. In our own case, U.I, the premier university in Nigeria, has continued to foster national development and integration. While strategically maintaining its status as a foremost centre of academic excellence, U.I. has not only continued to expand the frontiers of knowledge, but has a unique claim to transforming the society through innovation.

For us, it is indeed sixty years of sustained leadership and innovation.

The great 19th century poet and novelist, Victor Hugo, recognized the need for a fundamental constancy in the face of rapid change, when he said, “Change your opinions, keep to your principles change your leaves, keep your roots.” And so it is for the University of Ibadan as we move forward in the 21st century and with glad tidings celebrates the diamond anniversary of its beginning.

As the University of Ibadan is consciously changing its “leaves” to remain the best in attracting students and providing the best possible educational experience for them, it has conscientiously been careful to keep intact its “roots” of history, traditions, and most essentially, its mission and unwavering commitment to remain the flagship of tertiary education not only in Nigeria but the world over.

Many will say not how long but how well. U.I. has kept a long tradition of producing graduates who have been found worthy in character and learning; cutting edge research and the provision of excellent services.

This celebration is, therefore, an opportunity to showcase the achievements of the University to the public and stakeholders worldwide. In doing this, the anniversary planning committee, a mix of town and gown, has been constituted to put together several activities to mark the occasion.

The University of Ibadan has an exemplary culture of fund raising, investment and endowment which were being managed by a formidable Board of Trustees (as constituted by the Council of the University) with members who are of tested integrity, character and portfolio of achievements.

As the University of Ibadan continues to evolve and perfects its arts of excellence in learning and character, teaching, research and services; and at this moment of celebration of 60 years of standard bearer in character molding in educational policy and developments in Nigeria, we ask that our friends and partners continue with us on this journey.
