50 YEARS OF RECREATION AND FRIENDSHIP
Activities leading to the establishment of the Senior Staff Club can be traced back to 1955. In fact, the first constitution of the club was prepared in December of 1956. The Staff club was an amalgamation of "The Senior Common Room, The Senior Staff Sports Association and New Site Mess." However, establishment record available to the club was the Executive committee meeting of April 8, 1958 held in the Common room. This is why this date was adopted as the official foundation date of this great club.
The attendees at this historic meeting included;
- Professor J.E. WEBB of the Department of Chemistry who chaired the meeting as its President. Others were;
- Dr. Brosnaham,
- Dr. Mendel,
- Dr. Sandison,
- Dr. Zulaif,
- Miss Allen,
- Miss Thompson,
- Mr. Brimer,
- Mr. Casswell and;
- Dr. Bassir.
Major decisions were made at the meeting by the committee and these decisions gave the vision and mission we are celebrating this year. The club has provided those basic recreational services that have contributed to nurturing our intellection and creativity.
By 1969, the Club already had a shop and got supplies from ABC giving 5% discount on all purchases and free delivery. The Club shop was managed by several organizations from Messrs Peat, Marwick, Cassleton, Elliot & Co to leventis & Co Ltd and was later transferred to University supplies Limited.
However the size of the Club members prompted the idea of having a club building. In response to this, the Club met with Building works, and sites committee and presented to them a memorandum and plan of the Clubs requirements regarding land in the month of June 1959.
However, February 27 1960, the committee agreed on the following action, prioritized in the order given below:
1. A separate building to be erected for the Club
2. A car park to be made
3. A swimming pool (100ft) to be made
4. Extensions to the club premises
Consequently, a loan was obtained through the college council to execute these projects. As a result of the dedication of the past leaders, Not only were the projects promptly completed in 1962, the loans were completely liquidated by 1970
