Adult and Non-Formal Education for Sustainable National Development: Issues and Perspectives

(A Book in Honour of Late Professor J.T Okedara)

Over the last four decades, the major economic problem in Nigeria has been a stagnant economic growth which affects the well-being and ultimately labour productivity in Nigeria. The crisis has made many people to become temporarily poor, while the social and health indicators tend to worsen. This leads to urban poverty, unemployment, high crime rates, juvenile delinquencies, high maternal morbidity and mortality, undernourishment among children and adults, low school attendance, illiteracy, illness and even deaths.

With the return to democratic rule in 1999 and the gradual re-building of institutional structures and a vibrant market economy, the feasibility of Nigeria assuming a key position as a catalytic hub in the development of Africa has become more pronounced. Hence, the need in simulating Nigeria’s economic growth and launching the country onto a path of sustained and rapid socio-economic transformation has assumed an urgent and critical dimension.

In this perspective, Adult and Non-Formal Education is seen as a primary means of achieving this since the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development started in 2005. This paradigm shift to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is considered essential particularly in the developing regions of the world because of the need to focus more on holistic development through socio-economic and human development. The conviction guiding the present book which aptly pays tribute to the works of Late Professor Joseph Taiwo Okedara, a distinguished and renowned academics is that increasing Adult and Non-Formal Education opportunities is the basic requirement for a stable integrated and prosperous society where all the needs of the citizens and their enterprises are met in a sustainable manner.

Scholars, researchers, policy makers and practitioners in the field of Adult and Non-Formal Education within and outside Nigeria are invited to contribute to this volume to immortalise this erudite African scholar whose role during his lifetime was not confined to Adult and Non-Formal Education alone but also bears on Economics and Development, Social Work, Adult and Non-Formal Education in general.
